Tucked away behind Auckland’s infamous K Road is The Aviary, an experimental shared workspace, designed by and once home to Think + Shift, alongside multiple other creative studios and freelancers.
We wanted to compartmentalise the 190m² space while hanging on to the sense of collaboration. We designed custom-made floor-to-ceiling shelving, which houses plants that divide work from play areas. Bespoke sliding doors partially separate the meeting room from the main office space, again alluding to a sense of inclusion. Because we were working to an open brief, we incorporated a few design quirks too: a built-in tree overhangs a light-flooded seating platform and a Mako shark named Bruce guards the bathroom.
